Panguitch, Utah

With a bustling 2010 census population of 1,520, Panguitch is the largest city and county seat of Garfield County in Southern Utah.

The town is on the Sevier River. The principle access is US89 with State Route 143 running into the Cedar Mountains. The town has an elevation of 6600' above sea level.

The first attempt of white pioneers to settle the area occurred in 1864. Crops died in the high elevation and the Black Hawk War between LDS Pioneers and the Paiutes caused the Mormon pioneers to retreat.

Permanent settlement began in 1871 with settlers concentrating on raising cattle and timber. Tourism became the principle industry with establishment of Bryce National Park and National Forests in the area.
